Whoa, for those of us who went to college in Upstate NY at Hamilton, Cornell, Syracuse, Rochester, Colgate, etc. this new DC addition is a welcome addition to the DC food and sports bar scene.
Fried Rice Collective is best known for its hit Korean restaurant Anju and fast-casual Chiko. But co-owner Scott Drewno hails from outside Syracuse in a town called Penn Yan—”home to the world’s largest buckwheat pancake”—and he’s long wanted to pay homage to his upstate New York roots. Now, he’s finally getting that chance with Upstate FTW, a sports bar serving beef on weck, chicken riggies, and, of course, Buffalo wings. It opens tonight, just in time for football season.
Having put his stamp on breakfast, lunch and dinner at neighborhood favorites I Egg You, Chiko and Anju, respectively, Fried Rice Collective co-founder Scott Drewno is now turning his attention to Buffalonian barflies in need of some home cooking.
“We want to do a little wing emporium,” the New York native says of Upstate FTW (short for For the Win), a collaborative venture giving Drewno’s crew control of the food at the existing Sports & Social location on U Street NW. The culinary changeover, which debuts to the general public Thursday, involves remaking the menu into a reflection of Drewno’s youth — including the cut-rate garbage plates ($5.75 a pop) he says he lived on during his college years.
The Fried Rice Collective (Chiko, Anju, I Egg You) is taking over the kitchen at Sports & Social, dishing up Drewno's hometown specialties rarely seen in D.C.
Must try: Spiedies (marinated skewers) with salt potatoes and Utica greens.
"Garbage plates" — Drewno's college staple in Rochester — a mash-up of mac salad, home fries, chili and cheeseburger.
Zweigle's hot dogs, a Rochester institution, white or red.
Utica-style chicken riggies (rigatoni) with herby bread crumbs.
Late-night eats like French bread pizza.
“I was weaned on wing sauce,” Scott Drewno jokes. The chef has been in the DMV for 18 years, but he grew up in Upstate New York and has missed the Buffalo wings and garbage plates he was raised on. Now, he and partner Danny Lee, the chefs behind James Beard-nominated Fried Rice Collective, are bringing those updated nostalgic flavors to Sports & Social on U Street, partnering with Live! Casino & Hotel to create a food menu called Upstate FTW (“for the win”). The new menu rolled out Monday, September 1, with plenty of hardy upstate dishes, classic bar fare (crab dip, of course), and French pan pizza that bring back Drewno’s childhood memories of fighting over Stouffer’s pizza with his siblings.
